We live in a time restricted world. We have so many things to do that we often stall. This is not from lack of skill or lack of intelligence. It is simply a lack of process. In order to be productive, you must change that.

Look around your office. You will probably see two different types of people. There is the person who is always going 90 to nothing doing everything (usually dramatically) and expending much energy. You may think at first glance that this work-horse is holding up the weight of the company. Without her extreme workload, surely the business would fail. But, is this true?

The second personality type is the quiet and focused person. They are usually in management. Employees that are type 1 usually resent these people, They believe that they work twice as hard and all that type 2 does is come up with more ways to make them carry the load. From a CEO point of view, this is dead wrong.

The manager is more effective and more productive. They watch details. They have processes in place to see every aspect of the company. They have identified the work-horse. Though she may work hard, she will rarely advance past lower level positions. This is due to the fact that she lets the day control her instead of controlling her day. Her great energy allows her to do her job, but not to every look past it.

Tips for Increasing Productivity

  • Do your most important task first
    • Not only is this a smart business move, as it ensures that the task is done without issue, but it is also a mental boost.  If you put off doing a job that is critical, it will weigh on you. As you handle less important duties you edge toward panic mode. Your disposition changes to one of a self-perceived overworked and under-appreciated person.
  • Use a daily calendar and employ time-blocking.
    • Many people create a weekly or even monthly to-do list. There is nothing wrong with this, but unless you used a daily calendar, you will not accomplish all that you need to immediately. The method you should use is called time-blocking. You place each item on your calendar and block out the amount of time you can dedicate to working on it. You must stick to the schedule in order to be at your most productive.
  • Understand that there is no such thing as multitasking.
    • The simple fact is, you cannot do several things at one time and do any of them as well as you can. Do one thing and move it aside and do another. This is productivity
  • Make time for your passions
    • In order for you to be the best person you can be, you have to invest in yourself. Identify the things you enjoy and determine how much you want to enrich your life with them.  For example, maybe you love good coffee. You love to learn about how and where it is grown. You enjoy tasting the different blends, and this brings you happiness. Where do you want to take this?

This is where you add personal growth to professional habits. Make this a project and add it to your schedule. Ask yourself, “What are the best coffee beans?” Research the 10 beans you want to try (before you die) on Home Grounds website.

Once you have chosen the coffee beans you want to try, create a plan of action to do so.  The point is, your personal life, loves, and enjoyment is equal to your passion for your work. Be sure to include everything that makes you a well-rounded person. Accomplishing this is the true measure of productivity and success.

Cafe Neo Paloos Place – Thanks for the Memories

Cafe Neo Paloos Place – The long uneven and bumpy road that surely damaged the bottom of our low rides in some way… the 2 black gates that confused us as we approached, not knowing which is the entrance and which is the exit… the driveway with the wonderful greenery surrounding it…. the huge lawn, what great memories we made on that huge lawn… the best events in town that had the neighbors threatening local government action… the Cafe, the quiet, serene Cafe, where we could bury our heads over a hot brew and just work until we couldn’t work anymore. The BBQs, the Secret Cinemas, the kids parties, the food festivals, the Jazz festivals, the dinner parties, the list goes on….

Cafe Neo Paloos place might be closing down now, but in our minds it will always be open through the great memories that we shared there.

Farewell Cafe Neo, Paloos Place and Hello Cafe Neo, Chopsticks Plaza. Incase you’re wondering where that is, it is opposite the ASCON petrol station by the Lekki/Ikoyi bridge in Lekki Phase 1.

Coffee doesn’t cause cancer by WHO

“Pop some coffee; WHO says coffee no longer causes cancer.”

Since 1991, coffee has been saddled with the label, “possibly causes cancer.” As of June 15, coffee got a clean bill of health.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer – or IARC – is the WHO agency that evaluates evidence and scientific research on cancer. In 1991 the agency classified coffee as a category 2B carcinogen, which, in effect, labeled it as “possibly causing cancer” in the human bladder.

Twenty-five years later, another IARC group of scientific experts met to assess the body of published scientific literature on whether coffee can cause cancer. This working group, including 23 experts drawn from around the world, and seven observers, met May 24-31, 2016 to evaluate the carcinogenic effects of “coffee, mate, and very hot beverages.”

This time, based on the available scientific literature, the expert group decided that the weight of evidence supported a downgrading in the classification. As of June 15, 2016, coffee is now considered in Group 3, or “not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans.” For coffee lovers, this is reassuring news.

IARC has a carcinogenic classification system ranging from 1 (carcinogenic) to 4 (probably not carcinogenic). Experts evaluate several types of evidence, including studies of cancer in humans, studies of cancer in animals, sources of exposure and mechanisms (what is known about how the substance can cause cancer).

Some substances that IARC has classified as Group 1 (carcinogenic) are not terribly surprising. The list includes, for example, arsenic, formaldehyde, diesel engine exhaust and tobacco.

But when a substance gets a Group 2 classification, the waters become a bit murkier. Both 2A and 2B classifications typically mean there is limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans. But the classification bumps up from Group 2B (possibly causes cancer) to Group 2A (probably causes cancer) when there is sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in animals.

For this reevaluation, IARC experts had access to over 1,000 studies, and the combination of evidence did not add up to “possibly causing cancer.” In its report, the 2016 IARC Working Group stated that the previous association between drinking coffee and bladder cancer could have been due to inadequate control for tobacco smoking in the previous studies.

Now that an international team of experts has lessened our concerns about coffee drinking and cancer, are we in the clear?

More than half of adults in the United States drink coffee every day – three cups on average.

If you drink coffee, the good news is that you probably don’t need to cut back. If you drink coffee in moderation, there may actually be a range of health benefits. Phew.

Though the definition of “moderate” varies among studies, we are typically talking about 3-5 cups per day. And though a standard cup is 8 ounces, keep in mind that in most coffee shops, a small cup is 12 ounces. A generic 8-ounce cup of coffee has on average 108 mg of caffeine. But the amount can vary depending on the strength of the brew and size of the serving. The Mayo Clinic says that up to 400 mg/day of caffeine (4 cups) is just fine for most healthy adults.

Much of the latest research on coffee is coming out of the Harvard School of Public Health, which reports that moderate coffee consumption is associated with numerous health benefits.

Arguably the most pragmatic health outcome measurement is death, which holds true if the substance is coffee or, indeed, any other substance. On this front, a 2014 and a 2015 meta-analysis (a large statistical analysis that pools data from multiple studies) both showed that moderate coffee consumption was associated with a reduced risk of death from all causes.

Other meta-analyses have shown a reduced risk for serious diseases, including stroke, heart failure, Type 2 diabetes and Parkinson’s disease.

What about cancer, though? Here meta-analyses have also shown that drinking coffee is associated with a reduction in overall cancer incidence, and is especially beneficial in reducing the risk of liver cancer (and managing liver disease). In IARC’s 2016 evaluation, the Working Group stated that the evidence suggested that coffee had no carcinogenetic effect on breast cancer, pancreatic cancer and prostate cancer. They went on to note that coffee had a beneficial effect on uterine endometrium cancer and liver cancer.

And though coffee was once a no-no for pregnant women, obstetricians now say it is safe for pregnant women to have about 200 mg of caffeine per day. This amounts to a 12-ounce cup of coffee. As such, there is no need for a pregnant woman to switch to decaf if she keeps her consumption to only one cup a day. Although it’s worth noting that drinking more could be troublesome. The data are conflicting about whether high caffeine consumption (greater than 200 mg/day) increases the risk of miscarriage.

While it’s becoming clearer that moderate daily coffee consumption can be considered to be healthy, the reasons for its health benefit aren’t so clear. Harvard researchers suspect it’s not the caffeine, but rather coffee’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds.

Here’s an interesting nuance: IARC says it’s fine to drink coffee, but only if it’s not too hot. And by this they mean under 149 degrees Fahrenheit. A “very hot beverage” has a Group 2A classification, meaning that it is “probably carcinogenic.”

This is thought to be due to the hot beverage’s damaging effect on cells in the esophagus. In effect, it acts as a tumor promoter. However, this research finding relates to mate, which is traditionally consumed at burning hot temperatures with a metal straw. It’s not really an issue for coffee, which is usually consumed at about 140 degrees Fahrenheit in the United States. So unless the coffee feels burning hot on your lips, no need to cool down your coffee.

Coffee is not great for everyone, of course. Heavy caffeine use (more than 500-600 mg day) can have side effects like insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, stomach upset, fast heartbeat and muscle tremors. And some people are much more sensitive to caffeine than others, and these side effects may occur with just a little bit of caffeine. Because of this, a risk/benefit analysis may indicate it’s more risky than beneficial for people with health concerns like anxiety disorders, or who are taking certain medications.

If you are like me and you love your coffee, then the best available advice seems that we continue to indulge our thirst – in moderation, of course – but cut back if and when the coffee begins to disagree with you. And, talk to your doctor about any health concerns you may have.

Intellectual Monkeys

Wonders shall never end!!!

In what is deemed to be a first, a group of intellectual monkeys are alleged to have recently made Neo @ Paloo’s their habitat much to the bemusement and chagrin of regular customers. Interestingly these exotic creatures have taken human form (a la Fela’s “animal in human skin”) and, nourished by a steady stream of Eva water and Reel Fruit’s nuts, these creatures have shown an amazing propensity to surf the internet for long stretches of the day without leaving their seats.

We became aware of this phenomenon when we received a very angry and emotional call from a customer:

“I think it’s pure exploitation – clearly Cafe Neo is struggling for customers at its Ikoyi location. Using our simbian cousins to do “rent-a-crowd” is shameless. And to only feed them water and mixed nuts for 8,9, sometimes up to 10 hours really is the depth of desperation and cruelty to animals”

Our brand is important to us and we take customers’ complaints very seriously so we we asked Cafe Neo’s new CEO, Dele Akinyemi to respond to allegations. “Clearly this is unfounded but something is definitely going on. National Geographic had reached out a week ago to do a piece but I assumed it was a hoax. I can confirm that we do have regular visits from mammals (they are definitely not monkeys) who have a diet of only water and nuts. We are still trying to find a lingua franca to communicate with them but my goal as CEO is to reassure them that all the other 27 items on the menu can be bought and will be nourishing. At this point I would like to put a request out to the public for assistance in helping us bridge this vast communication divide”

Dele Dele Dele – how many times did I call your name?  See our new CEO Dele is too much. A doctor by training but he also deserves an honorary degree in grammatology. Left to us, we would have said
“Bros, sis – abeg don’t just sit down, buy ground nut, drink water and for the next 10 hours chop my AC, electricity and wifi. Help a startup na and show small support.” We could say that but that would be crass, demeaning to our customers and potentially detrimental to the efizi packaging we have struggled for so long to maintain. So instead we have Dele who can couch such with words like lingua franca and nourishing and hopefully our new visitors will have mercy on us and help a Nigerian startup. Up you my brother.

Cafe Neo And Big Cabal Media Get $250,000 From Lagos Angel Network

Lagos Startup DealDay which has event put together by the Lagos Angel Network saw two recipients get $250,000 from its maiden edition. These ventures are Cafe Neo and Big Cabal Media.

Although the event took place on March 31, 2016, the names of the recipients were not released until of recent.

One recipient Cafe Neo, is major player in the coffee chains space in Nigeria and currently have eleven outlets spread across the commercial city of Lagos.

The other, Big Cabal Media is the media company responsible for online like TechCabal, Zikoko and Radar. No doubt they have shown how the power of the media can be used for good as was they were instrumental to the enlightenment of Nigerians about the Ebola Virus, with the creation of EbolaFacts.

Lagos Startup DealDay is a quarterly investment process run by the Lagos Angel Network (LAN). It brings together LAN members, other angel investors and Lagos startup ecosystem players in a process where the very best startup ventures (across sectors) are guaranteed funding. Using Lagos StartUp DealDays as a vehicle, LAN is targeting to raise N100 million from its members and the early stage investment community for Lagos startups during 2016.
